About the data

Where the listings come from, and how far to trust them

Manx Teams is a checked list, not a scrape. This page says how a team gets on the map, how it is checked and kept current, what the data leaves out, and how to use it, so anyone quoting it knows what they are quoting.

What is covered

Teams, clubs and groups that people can join on the Isle of Man: sport, faith, arts and music, service and charity, hobbies, the outdoors, wellbeing, learning, community, youth and business. A listing is one team or group, with one pin where it meets. Groups that meet online are listed too, with no pin.

Every listing has a name, a category and its types, who it is for, a town or village (or online), and whether it is taking new members. Most also have a venue, the days it meets, the cost, a website, a few lines about it and the story of why it started. A team can also name the organisations it is part of: a league, association, federation, circuit or movement on the island, such as the Isle of Man FA or Scouts Isle of Man. An organisation with running teams has its own page, and the Organisations page lists them all.

How a team gets listed

How it is checked

Nothing goes live on its own. A person reads every new team and every correction before it is published: is it a real group, is the pin in the right place, is the website its own. A correction is merged into the listing field by field, so a blank box never wipes what is there. Organisations are added by a person too: a name typed on the form waits until someone checks it is a real organisation on the island.

How it stays current

Each listing shows whether the team itself has confirmed it, and when it was last checked and by whom: the team, or Manx Teams. A listing not checked for a year says so. A team can confirm its listing with one click, from a link in the emails the site sends it, with nothing to log in to. An organisation can send each of its teams due a check an email with that link from its own private page; the email only ever goes to the team's own address on file. A team the site believes has stopped is marked "May no longer be running" rather than removed, because a visible warning is more use than a silent gap. Every count on the site is worked out from the live list when the page is served, and the pages say "as at" the date.

Children come first

A team that includes under 18s never shows an email address or phone number anywhere: not on its page, not on the map and not in any data file. Contact goes through the team's own website or the organisation it is part of: a Scout group with no website of its own shows "Contact through Scouts Isle of Man", linking to theirs. Mobile numbers are never shown for any team, and no list of teams carries contact details at all.

What it does not cover

Using and citing it

The whole list is open data under CC BY 4.0. Use it however you like, and credit "Manx Teams (manxteams.com)" with a link.

Every team's page has a "Cite this listing" line ready to copy. Questions about the data, or a cut of it you need, go through the About page.
