Who we are
Manx Teams is run by Michael Josem, who lives on the Isle of Man. He decides how information on the site is used. If you have a question, or want something changed or taken off, email michael@michaeljosem.com.
The short version
- We list groups, not people.
- We never show a mobile number, or any contact details for a group with under-18s.
- If you give us your own email address, it is never shown on the site.
- Ask us and we take a listing off, no questions asked.
What we hold, where it comes from, and why
| About | What we hold | Where it comes from | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visitors | Your IP address and browser details reach Cloudflare, who run the site for us, as they would for any website. The map is told your country, never your town, and page visits are counted. | Your browser | To run the site and keep it safe. Your country lets the map say hello to visitors from off the island. Counting visits tells us which pages help. |
| People who use the form | What you tell us about the group. Your own email address, if you give it, and whether you help run the group. A check that you are a person, not a program. We do not store your IP address. | You | To check the listing before it goes live, tell you when it does, and, if you run the group and say so, ask about once a year whether it is still right. |
| Groups we list | The group's name, what it does, who it is for, where and when it meets, the cost, its website, a few lines about it and a map pin. A public email address or landline for adult groups, shown only on the group's own page. A private address for the group, if one is given, which is never shown. | The group's own website, social pages and news stories; people who use our form; the group itself | So people can find a group and join it. |
| Organisations | The organisation's name, website and which teams are part of it. A private contact address, if it gives one, which is never shown. | Its own public pages, and the organisation itself | To show its teams together, and to let it check that its teams' listings are right. |
| People who share a team or make a card | Nothing on our side. A first name you type to share a team stays on your phone, and goes in the links you send. A card is drawn on your phone and nothing is uploaded. | You | So the person you send it to knows who it is from. |
A group that may have stopped stays on the map, marked, but shows no email address or phone number.
Groups we added ourselves
We found many groups on their own websites, social pages and news stories, and listed them so people can find them. We can tell you where a listing came from: just ask. If you would rather your group was not listed, tell us and we will take it off.
You have the right to object to us listing your group or holding its details, at any time. Email michael@michaeljosem.com or reply to any email we send you, and we will stop.
Children
Groups for under-18s never show an email address or phone number anywhere on the site. We never put a name on a link or card for them. If you are under 18, please don't type your name when you share a team.
Faith, health and other personal groups
Being on the list of a church or a support group can say something personal about you. We don't put names on links or cards for faith groups, or for mental health, peer support and recovery groups. We ask that nobody is named in a group's description unless they have agreed to it.
Our legal reasons
For everything here we rely on "legitimate interests": we have a good reason to use the information, and we keep it to what is needed. You can object to any of it (see "Your rights").
- Listing groups: so people on the island can find groups to join, and groups can find new members.
- A group's public email or landline: so people can get in touch with the group.
- A group's private address: to ask the group whether a suggested change is right, and whether its listing is still current.
- What you send with the form: to check it, publish it and tell you when it is live.
- Visitors' details: to run the site, keep it safe and count visits.
Who sees it
- Everyone: the listings. No email address or phone number is in any list or download of teams.
- People who reuse the open data: the list of teams is open data under CC BY 4.0, so other sites, apps and AI services can use it. It carries no contact details.
- The companies that help us run the site:
- Cloudflare hosts the site and its database, checks the form for spam (Turnstile) and counts page visits (Web Analytics, which sets no cookies).
- Resend sends our emails.
- OpenStreetMap provides the map pictures. Your browser fetches them straight from OpenStreetMap, so they see your IP address. Place searches go through our server, so they do not.
- GitHub keeps the site's code and a weekly copy of the public list of teams, with no contact details.
We never sell information and we never use it for advertising.
Sending information abroad
Some of the companies above are based outside the Isle of Man, so information can leave the island:
- Cloudflare is a United States company with servers around the world. Our database is kept in western Europe.
- Resend is a United States company. Emails we send, and the addresses they go to, pass through its systems.
- GitHub is a United States company.
- The OpenStreetMap Foundation is based in the United Kingdom, and its map pictures are served from around the world.
How long we keep things
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Contact details sent with the form (your email address, and the group's email and phone as you sent them) | Removed 90 days after we approve or turn down what you sent |
| The same, on a form nobody has dealt with yet | Removed after 180 days |
| Contact details in our record of changes | Removed after 12 months. The record keeps which details changed, not what they were. |
| Listings | Until the group asks us to take it off, or we remove it. Taking a listing off also removes the contact details from every form sent about it. |
| An organisation's private contact address | Until the organisation asks us to remove it, or we remove the organisation |
| Reports from browsers that the site's security policy blocked something (the page's address without anything after it, and what was blocked; never who, their IP address or their browser) | 30 days |
| Weekly copies of the public list | 12 weeks |
| Cloudflare's own records of visits | As long as Cloudflare keeps them |
Things stored on your device
We set one kind of cookie of our own, and only when you open a private link we emailed you (to confirm a listing, answer a suggested change, or an organisation's private page): the key in the link moves into a cookie for that one page (one name for each kind of link), so it leaves your address bar and your history. It lasts two hours. Cloudflare may set a short-lived security cookie when it checks for attacks. The site keeps a few small things in your browser, and you can clear them at any time in your browser's settings:
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| The first name you type to share a team | So you don't have to type it each time. It also goes in the links you send. | Until you clear it |
| That you said "Not now" to adding the map to your home screen | So we don't ask again | Until you clear it |
| How many times you have opened the map | So we only suggest adding it to your home screen once you have come back | Until you clear it |
| The language you chose for the map | So the map opens in it next time | Until you clear it |
| That you have seen the "Know someone who would enjoy this?" note | So it shows once a visit | Until you close the tab |
| Copies of the site's files, the latest list of teams, teams you opened and map pictures you looked at | So the map still works with no signal | Until the site is updated, or you clear them |
| The key from a private link we emailed you (a cookie for that one page) | So the page works without the key showing in the address bar | Two hours |
| The spam check on the form (Cloudflare Turnstile) | To check a person is sending the form | Only while you use the form |
Your rights, and how to use them
You can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you, and give you a copy;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- remove it;
- stop using it, or use it less.
Email michael@michaeljosem.com. Say which listing or which email address it is about, so we can find it. It is free, and we will reply within a month.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have used your information, please tell us first and we will try to put it right. You can also complain to the Isle of Man Information Commissioner: inforights.im.
